If you have ever been forced to sit in one place for an extended period of time, then you've likely felt the urge to get up, move around, and get your blood flowing again. Few places exemplify this struggle quite like an office workspace. If you have an office job in which you sit at a desk and/or cubicle for hours every single day, you are probably very familiar with this feeling. Luckily, there is a new craze taking the office world by storm; sit-to-stand desks. As you may be able to infer from the name, these are desks that can transition from a sitting height to a standing height and vice versa. It may seem like a small, insignificant modification to your working environment, but as it turns out, standing once in awhile during your work days can help you see considerable improvements to your health.

Less Weight Gain and Obesity

One of the benefits you may discover from switching to a sit-to-stand desk is a smaller risk of weight gain and obesity. The Department of Clinical Sciences and Nutrition suggests, standing while working could help you lose nearly 200 calories a day or almost 1000 calories in one week. That's a remarkable number for such a considerably small change. Of course, having a healthy diet and exercising regularly are going to be far more effective in helping you maintain an ideal weight. However, if burning close to 1000 calories a week is as simple as standing once in a while, it is definitely a worthy investment.

Lower Risk of Heart Disease

Your heart could also see several benefits from choosing to stand throughout your work day. Some studies point towards standing throughout the day, especially after meals, reduces blood sugar levels. High blood sugar often leads to damaging blood vessels, which in turn causes several other nasty problems including strokes, heart attack, loss of vision, kidney disease, etc. Choosing a sit-to-stand desk will help lower the risk of many harmful health issues.

Reduce Neck, Back and Eye Strain

A very common issue among those who sit at desks all day tends to be back, neck and eye strain. It makes sense, as people may find themselves hunched over, squinting, or in other uncomfortable positions while they work. Standing up keeps you from having to put such unnecessary stress on your body. You will likely find yourself enjoying work significantly more as a result.

Less Stress and Fatigue

Speaking of helping you enjoy your job more, that is yet another benefit of a sit-to-stand desk; reduced stress and fatigue. Many employees who have made the switch to standing report lower levels of stress and fatigue. This helps improve your mood and subsequently your work efficiency. This is not only a benefit for employees but a major benefit to employers as well. This helps create a better office morale and therefore the company as a whole will benefit.

In fact, all of these benefits contribute to increased productivity at work. Being healthier and experiencing less pain and/or fatigue can help you feel better not just at work but in your home life as well.
